The province says work is now underway to build 100 new public housing apartments in Shannon Park.
This is the first phase of a larger housing plan announced in December that the government says will bring 930 affordable homes to that area.
“These homes will be part of an exciting new community development, close to schools, childcare, other homes and recreation,” said Housing Minister John White. “Working with Canada Lands, we are acting quickly. Site work is already underway.”
These apartments were originally planned for Old Beaver Bank Road in Lower Sackville, but later problems were found with the site, which would add millions of dollars to development costs and reduce the number of units.
Nova Scotia said 22 new apartments are currently being built on Old Beaver Bank Road, and the building will be ready in the spring of 2027.
According to the province, tenants will not pay more than 30 per cent of their income, before taxes, on rent.
The initiative is an agreement under the new federal Build Canada Homes agency, which involves a cost-sharing partnership between the federal and provincial governments. Build Canada Homes is a federal agency tasked with increasing the supply of affordable housing across Canada by driving a more productive and innovative homebuilding sector.
