The Bayer’s Lake wildfire prompted a special air quality statement for Halifax Metro and Halifax County West.

Environment Canada says smoke is reducing air quality in the area and locations downwind. Local smoke concentrations will vary with small changes in wind speed or direction.

People more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke, including those aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with existing illnesses or chronic health conditions, and those who work outdoors, are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

The weather agency recommends limiting time outdoors and considering reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

Another heat record broken as hot weather persists

Tuesday’s official high of 33 C broke another temperature record at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The previous record of 31.5 C was set in 1988.

Many areas outside the Halifax Regional Municipality remain under a heat warning for a third day. While the city itself is not under that warning, it will be another warm day.

Allister Aalders, 95.7’s weather specialist, says winds will be light today and humidity will be high, conditions that should help firefighters, but there is very little rain in the forecast.

“The only thing missing is the rainfall, which we need badly in the Halifax area,” said Aalders. “We could see a few spits of rain today, a chance of isolated showers. It’s not until Thursday night into Friday that we have a better chance of some more organized scattered showers. Even then, unless we do see a heavier downpour or a thunderstorm move in, rainfall amounts will be minimal.”

The forecast calls for more sun and temperatures in the mid-20s on Friday and through the weekend.
