Halifax Water officially implemented new mandatory water conservation measures for customers served by Lake Major.
The utility said the restrictions are in effect immediately, adding this will impact water service for communities in Dartmouth, Burnside, Cole Harbour, Westphal, North Preston and Eastern Passage.
This comes as the region continues to experience dry conditions and a lack of rainfall.
As a result, Halifax Water said the following activities are prohibited under mandatory Stage 1 conservation:
- Watering lawns
- Washing vehicles
- Filling pools
- Watering golf courses
According to Halifax Water, if residential and commercial customers fail to comply, they may receive a warning, a fine or suspension of service.
At the beginning of August, the utility asked customers to voluntarily reduce consumption, but it was met with little action from people.

“Since implementing the voluntary conservation measures on August 5th, Halifax Water has not seen a significant decrease in demand,” it said on its website.
Halifax Water is also asking people to voluntarily conserve water in other ways, such as shortening their showers, turning off the tap when they don’t need it, and if it’s yellow, let it mellow.
