A man and a woman are facing a total of 19 charges related to human trafficking following a three-year investigation.

The Nova Scotia Provincial Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) launched an investigation in 2023 following reports from multiple sex-trafficking victims.

“As officers began working with the victims, they connected them with appropriate resources in addition to putting together evidence to support criminal charges,” Sgt. Jeff MacFarlane said in a press release.

Investigators also determined links to New Brunswick and Ontario.

Financial analysts with the Forensic Accounting Management Group were brought in to assist the investigation, identifying over $500,000 in suspected proceeds of crime. These proceeds were funnelled through casino activities across the three provinces.

During a traffic stop on Highway 102 on April 10, officers from the HTU, the Nova Scotia Organized Crime section and the East Hants District RCMP safely arrested two people associated with the investigation.

“Reducing the harm caused by human trafficking remains a priority for police and communities across Nova Scotia,” Sgt. MacFarlane said. “Addressing this issue requires a united effort, and we recognize the strength and courage of the victims who came forward to support this investigation. Their cooperation helped dismantle a sex trafficking network and protect others from being victimized.”

A 49-year-old man from Porters Lake is facing 13 charges related to human trafficking and financial crimes. Charges include trafficking in persons, material benefit from sexual services, withholding or destroying documents, and laundering proceeds of crime.

He remains in custody pending a court appearance on April 20.

A 43-year-old woman from Chester Basin is also facing charges related to human trafficking and proceeds of crime.

She was released on conditions pending future court appearances.

The investigation is ongoing.
