A tornado watch has ended for areas north of Calgary on Wednesday evening.

The watch from Environment Canada was issued around 5 p.m. and included Airdrie, large parts of Rocky View County, Drumheller, and communities along the QEII Highway as far north as Olds.

Meteorologist said severe thunderstorms in the area posed a risk of producing an isolated tornado early in the evening.

The watch ended around 8 p.m.

The weather agency urges residents to take cover if threatening weather approaches.

In the event of a tornado or tornado warning, people are asked to head indoors to the lower floor, and away from outside walls and windows.
