One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on Stoney Trail in southwest Calgary on Sunday evening.
Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail between 17 Avenue SW and Bow Trail around 6:15 p.m. for reports of a collision.
Calgary police say multiple vehicles were involved. Images from the scene show a badly damaged vehicle flipped onto its roof near the side of the highway.
In an update Monday, officers say a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner, driven by a 25-year-old man, was heading south when he drove off the roadway across the grassy median and steered into the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail.
Police say the vehicle then rolled before it was struck by a 2008 Dodge Calibre being driven by a 25-year-old woman, who was heading north on Stoney.
The impact ejected the male driver from the vehicle toward an overhead sign, striking it and dying in the process.
Emergency crews rushed the driver of the Dodge and the passenger, a 22-year-old man, to hospital. The driver suffered life-threatening injuries while the passenger suffered minor injuries.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, while investigators say drugs and alcohol are being considered.
Stoney Trail was closed in both directions, with northbound traffic being diverted at 17 Avenue SW, and southbound traffic being diverted at Bow Trail SW.
Roads opened up just after 2:45 a.m.
