A driver has died of his injuries following a crash on Deerfoot Trail that Calgary police say was likely the result of excessive speed.
Calgary police say the crash happened in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot near Seton Boulevard SE around 1:25 p.m. on Aug. 17.
Police say a 2010 Cobra being driven by a man in his 50s started driving on the right-hand shoulder when the lanes of the highway reduced near the Seton overpass. The car hit a road construction sign, and then a cable fence, before driving up onto a grass median.
The driver was ejected from the car. He was rushed to the hospital in life-threatening condition. A passenger in his 30s was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
In an update on Monday, police say the driver died of his injuries in the hospital.
Investigators said at the time that impairment was not a factor in the crash, but that excessive speed was being considered.
Calgary police say 25 people have died in crashes on Calgary roads this year. In 2024, there were 29 fatal collisions in the city.
“Together, law enforcement, community partners, and Calgarians can help ensure everyone returns home at the end of the day,” says CPS Insp. Kurt Jacobs in a statement. “Slowing down, watching for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists, and driving according to the road and weather conditions, are all part of keeping people safe.”
