There was a bit of drama with one of the hundreds of horses that took part in the Calgary Stampede parade on Friday.

One of two horses carrying the wagon for the Blackfoot Warrior Party Horsemanship Film Society looked to go wild along the parade route at 9 Avenue and 6 Street SW, rearing up and down and getting frantic.

The horse appeared to get its leg stuck in a harness before falling to the ground and attempting to get back up multiple times.

Handlers rushed over to help, with one appearing to cut the horse’s leg free from the harness using a knife. One of the horse’s handlers appeared to sustain minor injuries.

The Blackfoot Confederacy, in a post to social media on Monday, gave props for one of their members for rushing over to help during the potentially dangerous situation.

After a few minutes, the horse popped back up, receiving cheers from the crowd before being led off the street.

Stampede officials tell CityNews a veterinarian examined the horse before it was walked back to the parade staging area at the Confluence.

Everyone inside the wagon left and moved off the parade route. The wagon was moved off after the incident.

There are more than 700 horses that take part in the Calgary Stampede parade each year.

Officials said Saturday that around 340,000 people are estimated to have visited the parade, a drop from 2024’s event.
