The bodies of two young men were recovered after the pair drowned in a southeast Calgary lake on Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to Mahogany Lake in the community of Mahogany around 5 p.m. for reports of a possible drowning.

Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews were directed to a dock near the Mahogany lake house upon arrival. Witnesses told crews they saw a young man struggling in the water before disappearing below.

“Surface rescuers utilized underwater cameras and search grids as well as shallow dives to identify the area,” reads a release from CFD. “The CFD called in the volunteer members of the Southern Alberta Underwater Search Team (UST) to perform a complete SCUBA search.”

While the search was happening, police officers found the belongings of another person in the beach area and investigators concluded two people may have drowned in the area.

UST members found the bodies of two 20-year-old men in the lake. The pair were removed from the water and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to call police at 403-266-1234.

CFD is reminding Calgarians the importance of water safety, life jackets and the dangers of both open water and swift water.

The Alberta Lifesaving Society says most drownings in Alberta happen in summer, and over 75 per cent of victims are male.

The beach will be closed through this morning and is expected to reopen this afternoon.
