A shelter in place has been lifted for NW Calgary residents after an armed suspect who shot at officers was found dead inside a home on Thursday evening.

Calgary police say the incident began several hours earlier when officers were trying to stop a person wanted on a Canada-wide warrant in the Crescent Heights area.

It is alleged the suspect got out of a vehicle on Crescent Road NW near 5 Street NW and then shot at police before entering a house with a second person.

Police surrounded the home and issued a shelter in place for residents in the area, asking them to stay inside and lock their doors.

The second person was taken into custody around 5 p.m. Police confirmed the original suspect was dead inside the home around 7:10 p.m.

No other injuries were reported.

The shelter in place was lifted around 8 p.m., but residents are still being asked to stay away from the scene while a police presence remains.

The provincial police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), was asked to review the incident, but Calgary police say they will retain handling the investigation.
