A 20-year-old motorcyclist is dead following a crash with an SUV in northwest Calgary late Sunday night.

Calgary police say just before midnight, a woman in her 30s was driving an SUV, turning from southbound 10 Street onto eastbound 16 Avenue NW.

At the same time, the motorcycle was speeding down 16 Avenue NW, quickly approaching the intersection.

Investigators believe the motorcycle changed lanes from the left lane to the left turn lane, and ran a red light.

The bike hit the SUV, and the rider was thrown from the motorcycle.

According to police, the motorcycle came to rest at the area of impact, and the vehicle went a short distance before stopping near the centre median of 16 Avenue NW.

The rider was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition where he later died of his injuries.

The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and wasn’t hurt.

Excessive speed on the part of the motorcyclist is believed to be a factor in the incident.

Neither alcohol nor drug impairment are believed to be contributing factors.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage of the incident is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
