A section of Deerfoot Trail was closed for several hours Tuesday following a multi-vehicle collision that left three people hurt.

Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail near Memorial Drive NE around 9 a.m. for reports of a crash.

Police say a van launched off of a ramp from westbound Memorial Drive onto Deerfoot and struck a car.

The driver of the van was ejected from the vehicle and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, and has since been upgraded to stable. Two people from another vehicle were left with non-life threatening injuries.

Footage from a traffic camera at Memorial Drive and Deerfoot Trail shows upwards of a dozen vehicles in close proximity under the overpass, including a transport truck and a van on its side.

Videos posted to social media shows a similar situation.

Police closed northbound Deerfoot Trail between 17 Avenue SE and Memorial Drive NE. Westbound Memorial Drive was also closed from Barlow Trail to 12 Street NE.

The roads in the area fully reopened around 5 p.m.
