A bright sight lit up the Calgary sky Thursday night, and many were lucky to see it for themselves.
Lisa Keith captured what appears to be a meteor falling in the northwest Calgary community of Capitol Hill shortly before 8 p.m.
Keith tells CityNews she wasn’t exactly sure what she was looking at, but had a feeling it wasn’t a shooting star because she’s a few of those before.
“We didn’t know and then a friend of mine who’s actually a pilot sent me a message and said it was space junk entering the atmosphere,” she explains.
“I mean honestly, it’s kind of sad and scary to think that we would even think that maybe it’s missiles or an attack or something, but that’s one of the thoughts that had come to mind,” Keith tells CityNews. “Then we thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s a shooting star,’ ‘Is this a meteor shower?'”
Reddit users are also speculating on what exactly they saw — a meteor, space debris, or a satellite falling from the sky.
The American Meteor Society said it had seven fireball reports for Alberta yesterday, four of those were from Calgary.
Other reports were also made from residents in Mînî Thnî, Banff, Medicine Hat, and Wetaskiwin. It’s unclear if all reports are regarding the same incident.
This is the second such incident in a matter of weeks, after a fireball was visible to many across Alberta on Feb. 10.
