A northwest Calgary home will be boarded up, fenced off, and have its locks changed after Alberta Sheriffs say it was a hub for drug activity.

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit of Alberta Sheriffs says the house on 4520 19 Avenue NW prompted complaints of regular drug activity in the past nine months.

Since September 2024, Calgary police responded to 31 calls for service at the property.

An investigation was opened by SCAN in October 2024. Since that time, officers say they’ve seen activity consistent with drug trafficking.

Public complaints have also been made about suspected laundering and trafficking of stolen property at the house.

The house will be closed for 88 days, starting Monday, and everyone, including the owner, must leave.

A Court of King’s Bench judge granted the community safety order, which bans all people from the property until Nov. 21.

SCAN members will continue to monitor the property for activity while the investigation continues.

Community safety order conditions remain in effect until Aug. 25, 2027.

Health authority shuts down house for insufficient accommodations

The property was also the subject of a closure order by Alberta Health Services (AHS) earlier this month.

A report by an AHS executive officer dated Aug. 7 notes several issues with the house.

Among the various issues were the lack of running water, a clogged main floor toilet, no working smoke alarms, mould, and several broken windows.

The officer also said there was evidence that the crawl space underneath the staircase was being used to sleep.

Standing water from a previous plumbing leak was found in the kitchen and near the washer and dryer in the furnace room.

All occupants were ordered to leave as of Aug. 25, the same day the closure order was lifted by SCAN.

The owner has been directed to fix a laundry list of items around the house.
