Calgary police are looking for more people who may have witnessed an assault on a man in the community of Bowness on Canada Day.
Investigators say just before midnight on July 1, officers responded to reports of an unconscious man with a head wound near Bowness Road NW and 64 Street NW.
Police believe the people who called 911 left the scene before officers got there.
The injured 64-year-old man was taken to hospital in stable condition. However, after he arrived his condition worsened and he remains in hospital in serious, life-altering condition.
After speaking with witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage, investigators believe that around 11:40 p.m., the man was walking eastbound on the south sidewalk of 64 Street and Bowness Road NW, when two men chased him, hit him, and knocked him to the ground.
Police say the pair then continued to assault the man with an unknown object, kicking and hitting him in the head until he was unconscious.
The suspects then fled the scene on foot, heading west on Bowness Road NW.
Investigators tell 660 NewsRadio they don’t believe the attack was random, but officers are still trying to determine the connection between the victim and the suspects.
Moments later, a passerby driving a black GMC truck found the victim and called 911. That witnesses left the scene before police got there.
Police believe there are more witnesses who may have key information that can help advance the investigation.
Officers want to speak with the man in the GMC truck, and any additional witnesses who may have been on scene shortly after the assault.
Calgary police are also asking that if anyone has CCTV or dashcam footage of the assault that they come forward to police by calling 403-266-1234 or tip anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
