Multiple people were taken to hospital Wednesday, four in critical condition and several with minor injuries, after a charter bus rolled off a highway northwest of Edmonton.

Beaverlodge RCMP say the bus was transporting oilfield workers; there were 17 people on board.

The crash happened on Highway 672 near Range Road 91 — near Beaverlodge and west of Grand Prairie — around 7 a.m.

Of the four people taken to hospital in critical condition, two were airlifted to Grande Prairie Regional Hospital by STARS. All other injured were transported by EMS. Some were assessed at the scene for minor injuries.

“There have been no fatalities,” Cpl. Mathew Howell said.

Howell said it’s not clear why the bus veered off the road and the investigation is ongoing. Speed, weather and alcohol are not believed to be factors, RCMP say.

The highway was scheduled to reopen around 5:30 p.m.
