A fire at an apartment building prompted road closures and an emergency response in Calgary’s Beltline neighbourhood on Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to 13 Avenue SW between 9 Street and 10 Street around 4:25 p.m. due to a fire at a 72-unit 15-storey building.

Calgary Fire Department (CFD) spokesperson Alex Kwan says crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the roof. Images from the scene showed flames on top of the building, with thick smoke rising into the sky.

Firefighters began evacuating residents and found the fire in the ceiling of a top‑floor unit. While most residents were evacuated, some were told to stay inside in areas of the building that weren’t affected, according to Kwan.

The fire was mostly out as of 5:30 p.m. Crews remain on scene checking for hot spots.

Paramedics say one person was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A firefighter was also assessed for minor injuries.

There is no word on the cause of the fire.

Police shut down 13 Avenue SW between 9 and 10 Street during the response. Traffic remains closed in the area.
