The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing an incident in Scarborough after a York Regional Police officer shot a suspect during an attempted traffic stop on Thursday evening.
The province’s police watchdog says officers were following a suspected stolen vehicle in the area of Kennedy Road and Clayton Drive from Markham into Toronto shortly before 7 p.m.
When officers attempted to box in the vehicle near Kennedy Road and Bonis Avenue, an officer discharged their firearm and shot the man inside the vehicle. According to police, no one else was in the car.
First aid was administered at the scene, and the man was transported to a trauma centre with non-life-threatening injuries.
“The complete sequence of events is still being investigated,” York Regional Police told CityNews.
Four investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case, the SIU announced.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that probes incidents where people died or were seriously injured. Investigators also review incidents where sexual assault has been alleged, or a firearm was discharged at a person.
