Planned construction on the Kitchener Line will halt trains this weekend from the region to Toronto’s Union Station.

According to Metrolinx, the transit agency that operates the system, Saturday Nov. 8 and Sunday Nov. 9 trains will not be running and the majority of the stations will not have replacement buses.

Go buses will only run between Mount Pleasant, Brampton and Bramalea GO and Highway 407 Bus Terminal.

Friday will also see some service adjustments on the line.

“The project is made up of many different pieces of work that once complete, will fit together seamlessly to deliver increased service and connections from Union Station to Kitchener GO, even on weekends,” Metrolinx said in the press release.

Two-way, all-day GO

It comes as the Ontario government announced a deal with CN Rail that would see the purchase of land dedicated to two-way, all-day service from Kitchener to Toronto early October.

It added four weekend trips to Kitchener, marking the first weekend service to the city and several existing trips extended further west, including one to the region.

The Kitchener Line upgrades are part of Ontario’s $70-billion transit expansion program, which includes new rail, subway and LRT projects stretching from Barrie to Niagara and Oshawa to Kitchener.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic called it “a transformative moment” for the city.
