After a very contentious 2025 budget process, the Township of Wilmot is seeking some outside help.

In a press release, the township said it hired business management and consulting firm KPMG to develop the 2026 budget along with a new long-term financial plan.

Specifically, the release said Mayor Natasha Salonen and the corporate leadership team made the move to “ensure budget development proceeds with renewed confidence and professional oversight.”

“This is about building trust, stability, and fiscal responsibility,” said Mayor Salonen in the release. “KPMG brings professional credibility and proven experience that will help ensure Wilmot’s financial decisions are transparent, accountable, and sustainable. This step aligns with our commitment to responsible budgeting and the long-term financial health of our community.”

This all came about after last year’s initial budget talks had a property tax increase of over 50 per cent. That was eventually whittled down to 18.22 per cent, but the entire situation left a bad taste in the mouths of ratepayers and council members alike.

The release goes on to say: “KPMG’s involvement will provide an independent assessment, help identify opportunities for improvement, and support the development of an evidence-based budget and financial plan rooted in sustainable practices.”

The township says the hiring of KPMG comes at no cost to taxpayers. It’s being funded through organizational savings coming from internal vacancies.

Wilmot Township Council is expecting to see the budget in December. The new long-term financial plan will come early in the new year.
