The Calgary Hitmen didn’t get the win Sunday, but tens of local charities did.

Dec. 7 was the Hitmen’s 30th annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

It wasn’t until late in the game the beloved tradition took place: veteran forward Ethan Moore found the back of the net with 7:05 left in the third.

26, 828 stuffed toys rained down on the ice at the Dome, marking more than 500,000 collected in the three decades of The Toss.

“For over 30 seasons our fans have backed this incredible charitable cause, and we would once again like to thank them for their tremendous support,” said Hitmen manager of business operations, Amy Bontorin.  “This game is a holiday tradition and the bears collected today will have a significant impact in our local community.”

More than 60 Calgary charities, including the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Calgary Food Bank, will share the toys this season.

During the game, Calgary wore red-themed teddy bear jerseys with snow-capped numbers. Those jerseys are being auctioned online until Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The home team fell to the Wenatchee Wild 3-2 in regulation.
